Health Bell Ringer Activity: Ranking Life Decisions (Decision Making)
A quick and easy teaching idea for teaching decision-making (Shape America Health Standard #5)
This is a quick and easy instant activity for teaching students how to make decisions. For this activity, students rank the various decisions on the cards by how much thought and consideration goes into making the decisions (a.k.a. how easy or hard it is to make each decision). The goal of this activity is to help students build awareness of many decisions they make on a daily basis and help them think critically about how they make decisions.
This activity is super easy. Just print, cut, and go!

As I walked around, it was interesting to see how different students ranked various decisions. For example, for some, they ranked “choosing what to wear as easy. While others said it was one of the most difficult decisions. It sparked some interesting conversation.

Decisions and the BEST Model
After students ranked their decisions and we discussed, I asked them to match each decision to one of the elements of the BEST Model (see the above picture). One student quickly used a dry erase and wrote out "BEST" on their desk (I'll definitely be using that idea in the future!).
This instant activity was the perfect lead into introducing the WISE skill cues for decision making (a much needed upgrade from the DECIDE Model).
