Self-Management Skill Practice: Assess Your Health with the BEST Model

The BEST Model is Project School Wellness’s signature health framework for teaching holistic health and helping students learn how to manage their well-being.

Attn: Health Teachers! I am so excited to introduce you to the BEST Model and this corresponding health worksheet! The BEST Model is a simple and easy-to-remember model for teaching holistic health.

I’ll be honest, I find myself using the BEST Model all of the time to manage my own well-being 😅

What is the BEST Model?

The BEST Model is a holistic health framework and self-assessment tool for evaluating and managing well-being. The goal of this health education tool is for students to have a model they can easily remember and routinely use to evaluate their well-being and make intentional choices to care for themselves. And what’s better than the word BEST?

The four quadrants of the B.E.S.T. Model represent four core aspects of a person’s health

  • B for Body

  • E for Environment (and Surroundings)

  • S for Self

  • T for (Social) Ties

Each plays a key role in influencing and determining a person’s overall quality of life (a.k.a. how healthy and happy they are).

Health Triangle vs. Wellness Wheel vs. BEST Model

I’ve opted to use this as an alternative to the health triangle and even the Wellness Wheel (although I still like this one) because of its simplicity. I love that it can be impactful just by remembering the word: BEST. I also love that students have the freedom to decide what each quadrant ideally looks like in their lives.

Health Skill Practice: Self-Management

This mini health worksheet is the perfect printable for a health class. Print off a sheet (4x per sheet) and give each student a sheet. Then, they can use they can track their daily BEST as a quick check-in with their well-being.

The Thumbs Up/Down is for a general well-being check. And the B.E.S.T. circles are to evaluate what aspects of their well-being are doing well (✅) and which are struggling (❎).

As always, the goal is to help students build self-awareness! And this is a simple way to check in with yourself and either be grateful for what’s going well or bring attention to what needs to change.

I’d love to hear how you use the BEST Model in your health classroom!
