Health Sequencing Activity: The VOICE Skill Cues for Advocacy
An Instant Activity for Health Class to introduce the VOICE Skill Cues for Advocating for Others
Learning how to be an advocate for others is a core health skill and Standard #8 of SHAPE America’s National Health Education Standards. To help students learn how they can be an advocate, I use the VOICE skill cues:
V - Validate the Need - Identify and acknowledge the issue you want to advocate for.
O - Organize Your Thoughts - Gather relevant information and plan what to say.
I - Identify How You Can/Will Help - Make a plan for how you will advocate.
C - Champion Your Cause - Time to put your plan into action and become an advocate.
E - Evaluate the Impact - Follow up on your advocacy efforts and assess their effectiveness.

My favorite way to introduce new skill cues is with instant activities like this one. After printing and cutting out sets of the sequencing cards, divide students into groups of 2-3 and ask them to:
First, put the skill cues in the correct order.
Then match the scenarios to each VOICE step.
Once they’ve organized the cards, debrief as a team. This classroom engagement helps familiarize students with the VOICE step-by-step process for advocating. Then, you can build on this knowledge and start practicing the skill.
